Franciscan Villa Child Care Center - Outdoor Mural

June 2025- South Milwaukee, WI

First impressions matter everywhere. But at a daycare? They matter more than most. Parents are dropping off the people they love most in the world. That moment of walking up, of seeing the building for the first time, sets the tone for everything that follows. Trust, comfort, excitement for the kids. Peace of mind for the parents.

Franciscan Villa Child Care Center was opening a new facility, and the outside wasn't quite there yet. The building was functional, clean, but quiet in a way that didn't match what was happening inside. The best solution they had found before we connected was a small canopy near the entrance to add a little warmth. It helped. But a canopy can only do so much.

That's where the conversation started.

We worked through the design together, a real back and forth to figure out what this wall needed to say and who it needed to say it to. The answer was pretty clear: kids playing, color everywhere, the kind of visual energy that makes a child point at a building from the back seat of a car and light up before they even get out.

The mural went up on the second story exterior. Big, visible, impossible to miss. Kids in motion, bright colors layered against the architecture, the kind of composition that breathes differently depending on the light. On a clear day, the painted sky blends right into the real one above it. That's the moment you work toward on a project like this.

The surrounding community got something too. A building that used to fade into the block now announces itself. Color has a way of doing that. It doesn't just decorate a space, it invites people into it.

Congrats to the Franciscan Villa team on the opening. The kids are going to grow up thinking that wall was always there. That's exactly how it should be.
